The State Inspector, Londa Toloraia Met with the Ambassador of Austria

The State Inspector, Londa Toloraia met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Austria to Georgia, Thomas Muehlmann. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the activities of the State Inspector’s Service and discuss prospects for future cooperation. The Head of International Relations, Analytics and Strategic Development, Tamar Zubashvili also attended the meeting.

Londa Toloraia briefed the Ambassador of Austria on the main achievements of the Service, as well as on the implemented and ongoing reforms. She also discussed in detail legislative and practical challenges that impede effective functioning of the Service. 

During the meeting, the draft law on Personal Data Protection submitted to the Parliament of Georgia by the State Inspector’s Service and importance of timely adoption of the law were discussed. Also, the hindering factors of investigating alleged crimes committed by law enforcement officials and civil servants and measures to be taken to overcome the obstacles were covered.

The Ambassador of Austria, Thomas Muehlmann inquired about the reasons due to which the law on Personal Data Protection has not been adopted by the Parliament and expressed particular interest in the investigative function of the Service. The Ambassador touched upon important issues such as: the scope of investigative authority of the Service, challenges related to obtaining evidence, relations between the State Inspector’s Service and law enforcement agencies and level of cooperation with public entities in the process of investigating crimes committed by civil servants.

Thomas Mulman noted that the State Inspector’s Service should continue working actively to further strengthen its institutional independence.
