Who are we?

Personal Data Protection Service

The Personal Data Protection Service is an independent state authority, its activities are:

  • Monitoring lawfulness of personal data processing;
  • Monitoring covert investigative actions and activities performed within the central databank of electronic communications identification data.

President of The Personal Data Protection service

 

President of The Personal Data Protection Service shall manage the Personal Data Protection Service.

The Parliament of Georgia shall elect the President of The Personal Data Protection Service for a 6 year term.

President of The Personal Data Protection Service  shall be independent in exercising his/her powers and shall not be subordinate to any official or body.

President  of The Personal Data Protection service is inviolable. Any type of influence on the President of The Personal Data Protection service or illegal interference with his/her activities, shall be prohibited and is punishable by law.

Since march, 2022, Lela Janashvili has been carrying out the authority of the President of The Personal Data Protection service

Activities

  • Personal Data Protection
  • Oversight of Covert Investigative Activities and Law-Enforcement Authorities

One of the key functions of the Personal Data Protection Service is the oversight of data protection legislation and monitoring lawfulness of data processing in Georgia. For this purpose, the Office conducts its activities in four main directions:

  • Audit (inspection) of the lawfulness of data processing in public and private entities;
  • Handling citizens’ complaints related to data protection;
  • Providing consultations to public and private entities on the issues related to data protection;
  • Informing the public about the state of data protection in Georgia and events related to it.

On the basis of legislative amendments of 2017 the State Inspector monitors all types of covert investigative actions and activities performed by Operative-Technical Agency within central database.

Service monitors a covert investigative action – interception of telephone conversations – via electronic control system, special electronic control system and by inspecting data controller or data processor.

President’s Decisions

By the President’s decision an online platform was developed where the decisons made in result of handling complaints and inspections are publicly available. Visitor of the webpage can search them by various criteria, e.g. by date, disputed issue or by taken measures. The register is updated gradually.
