Activities of the Inspector’s Office during three years of its establishment and future perspectives were discussed at a roundtable organized with the assistance of the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on July 7, 2016.

The meeting was attended by representatives of non-governmental and international organisations. The results of activities that were implemented after the establishment of the Inspector’s Office, as well as challenges and new opportunities that will enhance personal data protection in the country were discussed.

Tamar Kaldani, the Personal Data Protection Inspector; Peter Danis - EU Delegation to Georgia; Management of EU Development Aid Programmes in Justice and Human Rights Sectors; and Rusudan Tushuri, UNDP Project Manager of “Human Rights for All” opened the event with welcome remarks.

"During the past three years we were focused on identifying, revealing and eliminating systematic problems. Thus, we covered both big data holder public institutions and private organisations, but problems might also exist in the medium and small sectors. Therefore, there is a need to increase the scale of our activities and to cover all areas. Additionally, it is important to have more communication with the society and to provide them with information,” Tamar Kaldani said.

Participants from the non-governmental sector focused on the gaps pertaining to personal data protection in Georgia and presented their views and ideas about increasing public awareness of data protection issues.

The parties expressed their readiness for further close cooperation and joint efforts.

The activities of the Office of the Personal Data Protection Inspector have been increasing year by year. In total, the Office conducted 115 inspections from July 1, 2013 to July 1, 2016. Among them, 58 public institutions and 904 units of 57 private organisations were covered. Violations were revealed in 155 cases. Moreover, the Inspector’s Office provided more than 3,000 consultations and examined 229 citizens’ complaints.

The roundtable was organized with the financial assistance of the EU in the framework of the programme “Human Rights for All,” which is jointly implemented by the four UN agencies – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and International Labour Organization (ILO).
