Parliament of Georgia Elected Tamar Kaldani as the Personal Data Protection Inspector

Parliament of Georgia elected Tamar Kaldani as the Personal Data Protection Inspector by 85 votes in favour and none against. The second candidate, Nikoloz Legashvili, received 44 votes from Members of Parliament.

According to the rules prescribed by law, Natia Mikeladze, the Deputy Parliamentary Secretary of the Gov ernment of Georgia, introduced the candidates’ biographies to legislative body before the voting.

Tamar Kaldani has a legal background. She has been the first Personal Data Inspector since 2013. The Office of Personal Data Protection Inspector was established under her leadership to deal with citizens’ complaints and to inspect the legitimacy of data processing by data controllers.

According to Tamar Kaldani, nomination for the second term as the Personal Data Inspector serves the aim to continue launched reforms. It is important to continue work in two directions: growth of the scale of activities, investigating data processing in different sectors, as well as raising public awareness through increased communication.

Selection process of the Personal Data Protection Inspector started on May, 2016. The Selection Commission was formed by the Prime Minister to whom the candidates were presented. Afterwards, the Prime Minister presented the selected candidates to Parliament. The voting process took place today and the Parliament of Georgia elected Personal Data Protection Inspector for a three-year term. First time Tamar Kaldani was appointed as the Personal Data Protection Inspector in 2013. According to the law, the same person may be elected as the Personal Data Inspector for two consecutive terms.

Tamar Kaldani will take up her reappointment from July 2, 2016.
