A Selection Commission Staff Was Set up to Select the PDP Inspector by Order of the PM

A Selection Commission staff was set up to select the Personal Data Protection (PDP) Inspector by order N114 of April 18, 2016 of the Prime Minister (PM) of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili.

The Commission was formed by the Prime Minister included:

  • Tea Tsulukiani, Minister of Justice
  • Eka Beselia, Chairperson of Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee at the Parliament of Georgia
  • Mzia Todua, Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Court
  • Natia Katsitadze, Deputy Public Defender
  • Giorgi Kldiashvili, Director of the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI)

In accordance of the law, a citizen of Georgia, who has a higher legal education, at least five years of working experience in the field of human rights and appropriate business and moral characteristics may be elected as the Inspector.

Moreover, the law of Georgia on the Personal Data protection outlined that Commission will select no more than five and less than two candidates for the position of Inspector and introduce to the Prime Minister. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Georgia, within 10 days, will introduce two candidates to the Parliament of Georgia for selection and the Parliament, according to the rules of procedure, no later than 14 days after the nomination of candidates will elect inspector. If neither of the candidates receives enough votes for election, the PM of Georgia shall announce a new competition within two weeks.

The Inspector shall be appointed for three years. The same person may be appointed to the position of Inspector for only two consecutive terms. The term of office of a newly-appointed Inspector shall run from the day following the expiry of the term of office of the current Inspector.
