Recommendations on Video Surveillance are already adopted

The Office of the Personal Data Protection Inspector issued recommendations on Video Surveillance. The aim of the Document is to implement regulations provided for by the Georgian Law on Personal Data Protection and to establish European standards for data protection in the country.

The Document defines video surveillance and clarifies i where, when and for which purposes video monitoring systems can be installed.

“As video surveillance is considered to be one of the most radical forms of interference in private life, it is of vital importance for the organizations to get familiar with the risks and justify the usage video surveillance systems. Citizens shall be informed on their rights and on the fact that they are in the area subjected to video monitoring” – explains the Personal Data Protection Inspector, Mrs. Tamar Kaldani.

“During video surveillance data processor is fully responsible for data security; and appropriate organizational and technical measures should be ensured. Access to the video recordings involving personal data and to the video surveillance monitoring room should be also limited to the persons whose direct obligation is to monitor recordings” – is mentioned in the document.

The sample images of the warning signs are annexed to the Recommendation and the obligation of the organizations to place visible signs in the areas of video surveillance is underlined.
